Her Hygiene Project (2024)
March 10, 2025

Empowering Afghan Women Through Health And Awareness

Since its launch in September 2022, the Her Hygiene Project has been a vital initiative dedicated to addressing Afghan women and girls’ menstrual health and hygiene challenges. Over the past two years, the project has successfully reached and educated hundreds of women, fostering awareness, breaking taboos, and improving access to essential hygiene resources. In March 2025, the project completed the first phase of its third year, marking another milestone in its journey towards empowering Afghan women through education and support.

Our Mission

The Her Hygiene Project was designed to equip women and girls with essential knowledge about menstrual health, personal hygiene, and reproductive health while addressing cultural stigmas and social barriers restricting open discussions on these topics. With Afghanistan facing severe restrictions on women’s education and movement since August 2021, many girls and women have been denied access to critical health information and resources. This project aims to bridge that gap by providing safe, secure, and inclusive learning spaces.

Implementation and Approach

The project operates in three-month cycles, with each implementation phase targeting 100 women and girls who have been excluded from education due to economic hardship, disability, or social restrictions. To ensure accessibility and security, training sessions are held in protected venues, and transportation allowances are provided to participants, allowing them to travel safely.

Each session is designed to be interactive and informative, covering key topics such as:

✔️ The physiology of the male and female reproductive systems
✔️ Menstrual health and hygiene management
✔️ The impact of stigma and cultural taboos on women’s health
✔️ Mental health and emotional well-being related to menstrual stigma

A crucial element of the project is its community-centered approach, where participants gradually overcome shame and fear associated with discussing menstruation. By fostering a safe and supportive environment, women and girls gain confidence to talk openly about their challenges, share experiences, and support one another.

Impact and Achievements

Increased awareness and knowledge

Hundreds of women and girls have received education on menstrual health, reducing misinformation and breaking harmful myths.

Access to hygiene products

Participants receive hygiene kits containing sanitary pads, soap, and other essential items, improving their ability to manage menstrual health safely.

Community engagement

By involving local leaders and families, the project has fostered acceptance and encouraged open conversations about women’s health.

Addressing mental health needs

The latest phase introduced mental health support sessions, helping women cope with stress and emotional challenges under restrictive conditions.

Challenges and Solutions

Geographic Barriers & Transportation

Many participants come from remote villages, making travel difficult. To address this, the project provides transportation allowances, enabling women to choose the safest travel options.

Cultural Resistance & Stigma

Menstruation remains a taboo subject in many Afghan communities. By engaging trusted community members and emphasizing health benefits, the project has helped reduce stigma and encourage open discussions.

Security Concerns

Operating in areas with ongoing instability presents significant challenges. To ensure participants’ safety, the project chose the most secure way for transportation and protecting personal information of participants .

Looking Ahead

As the project progresses, future phases will further expand outreach, enhance accessibility, and introduce new topics, such as:

🔹 Enhanced mental health support to address emotional challenges under restrictive conditions
🔹 Advanced health and hygiene education to empower participants further
🔹 Broader community engagement efforts to normalize conversations around menstrual health

The Her Hygiene Project remains committed to its mission of empowering Afghan women through education, health awareness, and access to essential resources. Through resilience and community support, we strive to create a future where menstrual health is no longer a source of shame, but a right that every woman can access with dignity.
